Book’s Description
From very rare historical accounts, a few fleeting 'snapshots' among bas-relief carvings, but above all from an architectural heritage that is unique in the world, we have a testimony to the brilliance of Khmer civilization at the time when Angkor, the ancient Yashodharapura, was the most powerful empire ever to exist in Southeast Asia, As in the past, when it was the historic capital of Cambodian, Angkor (a name derived phonetically from the Sanskrit Nagara, meaning a town or city, modified as Nokor and then as Angkor) is once again a magnet for many visitors, The prestige of th site comes both from the splendor of the monuments and the very special character of their setting, which juxtaposes plains and hills, forests and rice fields, lakes and watercourses. In this pleasingly diverse landscape, the Khmer themselves, who have lived here since the earliest times, are the greatest of all the riches at Angkor its true soul, No matter how long a visitor spends here, and however little one stras from the beaten track, the sight, and however little one strays from the beaten track, the sight of a Buddhist ceremony in a modest village pagoda or of a fisherman pulling in his line is what reflects the clear cultural continuity of this site, far more that all the studies produced by scholars.
